MAvis Peddie, Pastor
Mavis started at First Baptist Church, New Glasgow, as Interim pastor in September 2024. Previous to this, Mavis has been a pastor at Hopewell-Eureka-East River, Nova Scotia and in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. But her career did not start there. Mavis has a Master of Social Work – University of British Columbia and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology – University of Toronto. She has served as a social worker in Canada’s high Eastern Arctic, now called Nunavut, as well as directing a prison ministry in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia.
Having spent her childhood in beautiful Banff, Alberta, Mavis resists saying she was “from the prairies”, although she lived in Regina and surrounding area for -- more than 25 years-- raising her five children. Mavis has a partly Scottish ancestry, and always felt a pull to the Maritimes,. She took seriously becoming familiar with Nova Scotia while attending the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, travelling a lot, and fell totally in love with Cape Breton. Since moving to Hopewell during Covid, July 2020, Nova Scotia continues to feel like “coming back home”. Pastor Mavis says, “When people ask where I’m from, the only good answer is – Canada.”
Mavis frequently led small group, adult Bible studies, finding joy in helping believers grow in their faith. This, and being involved with worship music, whether singing or playing the piano, are her passions. Mavis has actively taken leadership positions in – churches across several denominations. For many decades now, she has is interested in all things ecumenical. --- When people ask her what her church background is, she uses an answer --- she developed for her Grad Project at AST – “I am a Presby-Bapti-Angli-Costal-Luther-United-Terian!!”
“My life has held a vast range of adventures; I am full of gratitude. Isn’t God so full of surprises?! My years since receiving God’s call into ministry have been some of the most fulfilling and happy years of my life. To have reached this place of actually being an ordained minister in The Church quite overwhelms me.!”
“May ALL the thanks and glory be given to my God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”
